35 members of 1st Stoke Gifford old school rooms troop spend an evening at frome field in Woodhouse park firelighting and backwoods cooking on open fires. The scouts first hand to set the fires some using pyramid technique and others the stacking technique with newspaper, straw, tumble dryer fluff and kindling. Then once the fires ignited using either flint and steel, magnesium rod and striker or when all else failed the good old match! Whilst The fires died down the scouts foraged for stickers so they could impale a sausage and wrap it with dough making a sausage roll, Mike’s was cremated, but all tasted fab. Another course was burgers cooked in embers sat on a cabbage leaf which were transferred to buns and cheese slices. The cabbage also tasted crispy. We finally did marshmallows for s’mores and popcorn. A manhunt Widegame to finish and we were all off home after a fun couple of hours and it was great being back out at Woodhouse park. Big ty to Mike who arranged the session and bought all the supplies. Today saw scouts from the old school rooms troop in Stoke Gifford turn up at Sand Bay beach in Kewstoke near Weston- super- mare for some litter picking. With the help of leaders and a few parents the scouts grabbed their pickers and rubbish bags and made their way from the car park over the road and dunes onto the sand. There were a group of Surfers against Sewage doing a test litter pick over a 100 feet by 100 feet area so the scouts went beyond this area and by paying particular attention to the high tide line found large amounts of plastic from rope strands, beads, lolly sticks and even straws. It was very warm when the clouds were gone but very nice when they returned with a refreshing sea breeze. We all stopped at lunchtime and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Massive thank you to all the volunteers for coming out today. We had some fabulous comments from other beach goers thanking us for our hard work and questions regarding where we were from and why this particular beach etc. This was our little bit of giving back enjoying a weekend scout session. Tonight the OSR scouts took part in bath bomb making for STEM week and whilst filling out CREST work books for another bronze award. Kathryn ran the session having made bath bombs before for her business and she had the scouts split into 3 groups and subdivide each group into 3 groups making Apple, Cherry and Orange with slowly mixing in the colour and water for binding. The scouts worked well completing all the mixing etc to make a bath bomb each. Now they need to test it! Then during this half term make another changing a quantity of an ingredient and noting the change. The workbooks and some photos need to be brought in to osr for sending off for adjudication and awarding of certificates. Good luck all and happy bath bomb making all. |
