Tonight the Old School Rooms scouts welcomed the South West meccano club back again for the fourth time in 8 years. The team of 4 enthusiasts had a short talk about their hobby and the history of Meccan and then split the scouts into small teams to build jeeps and cranes. The Meccano helps develope the scouts dexterity with small fiddly bits to join together. All the scouts got stuck in and managed to complete their model in time. Great big thank you to the club members for giving up their evening and for making this a fabulous session. Great job by all the scouts. So today the Old School Rooms Scouts learnt something new. They spent an evening learning 3 new knots, these were fishing knots because the troop have had lots of fishing experiences and to complete the Angler Activity badge they needed to show their knowledge of knots. To achieve some of the leadership requirements the PLs were taught the knots whilst the scouts took part in 3 problem solving exercises (minefield, tower of Hanoi and hand/ foot trail). Then the PLs taught their patrols and the whole troop then raced each other in a relay for patrol points. The 3 knots; Trilene, Uni and Palomar. What a way to spend a Sunday, Four Old School Rooms Scouts represented the troop at the Avon County Cooking Competition out at Keynsham Scout HQ. There were teams from all over the County and after a whole morning of preparation, cooking and presentation it was all over. The young team didn’t manage to get in the top two to represent the County at the Regional finals but they had a great experience which was fun and relaxed. The judges had a hard job today. The Old School Rooms troop in Stoke Gifford is getting so big that they’re having to split to attend activities. So this evening half the troop rocked up at the Warhammer Shop in The Mall for an evening of model making. This is a free session and includes models and game playing. They even invite the scouts to return and paint the models. The other half of the troop turned up at The Apple Store in The Mall for some coding, graphics and playing on anything Apple in store. They controlled an orb and navigated obstacles and were rewarded with an Apple badge. We would like to say a big Thank You to both organisations for giving us this opportunity as the scouts had a fab time. |
