Today some of the OSR scouts gave up there day to help/ volunteer to help with their fundraising with the Xmas tombola and hot dogs. The halls were all full of people from the very start. Happy Christmas everyone! This evening the scouts from the old school rooms were joined by Lauren who works for South Glos Councils drug awareness unit. She normally goes into schools and talks to pupils about the dangers and harm drugs, alcohol and tobacco can cause to our bodies especially when are bodies are still developing. The scouts were shown samples of illegal drugs and legal prescription medication, slang names for each and effects to humans. They were told about nicotine in tobacco and alcohol. Big TY to Lauren for coming in and giving up her evening. Some feedback was that the scouts were very aware and even the youngest showed a knowledge that will arm them with facts that will prevent them from getting involved. The OSR scout troop have some help from officers at Patchway Fire Station during tonight’s visit. The scouts were able to see the clothing and equipment the officers have on the fire engines. They were taken through the fire safety activity badge requirements. From extinguishers to grass fires and 999 calls to what to do if you find yourself in a building fire the scouts learnt a lot. Big TY to the lads on station for all their help and information. Today the 1st stoke Gifford scout group were joined by the guides and scout groups from walscourt farm and little stoke. It was probably the largest parade of uniformed groups in memory and while we all gathered in the fine rain (between a rain front that had passed half an hour before and before the next front which was due in an hour) all the young people and adults stood chatting but 10 minutes before walking down to the service everyone started to move and get into formation. Oliver carried the flag for the OSR scout troop and Lilly the flag for the cubs. 10.15 exactly the rainbows, brownies and guides moved off followed by beavers, cubs and scouts from SG and solar esu, then walscourt farm group and 1st little stoke in order. The temperature dipped but the rain stopped once we reached the green and flag bearers broke off to stand with the wreath bearers and the uniformed groups turned left and formed up around the memorial. The service started at 10.30 with prayers then RBL poem and last post bugle playing. The OSR scouts had all done research on the names written on the memorial stone. Oliver and Lilly lowered the flags for the 2 minute silence then raised them again. Then the laying of the wreaths 1st SG as always laid by Paul GSL and after another prayer it was over. Silent thoughts of why we were there and then we were dismissed and off home everyone went. |
