On the run up to Remembrance Day the OSR scout troop invited a serving soldier into the troop evening to talk about why he joined, when, where he has served and kit he uses. The scouts tried his kit on and one scout became a mock casualty and a survival stretcher was made to get her to safety and medical care. The scouts loved listening to Sim who answered their questions and helped them to understand where he had served around the world. This afternoon and evening lots of volunteers from OSR scout troop and other sections joined together to get ready for the bbq fundraising at st Michael’s school in Stoke Gifford. Tent and equipment sorted it was time to cook off the onions and meat ready for the start of the fireworks display, some 1600 people had pre bought tickets and many others were unable to pay on the day so crowded into the lane near the container. The gates opened at 5.30pm and it was crazy with a continuous que and the 15 volunteers were kept busy for an hour. The display started and the volunteers had a short break before finishing off the cooking and selling what was remaining. The final total is still to be confirmed but we all had fun and the fireworks were great. Well done to all that volunteered and made this another success. Today as a follow on from the Wednesday street art talk session the osr scouts met up in Bedminster, Bristol to have a walk and talk with Stephen a founding member of Upfest. The session started at 10am and after a safety brief we wandered around the area looking at street art done by 400 artists for the Upfest festival. We were told that there are over 1,000 artists that apply and 150 come from all around the world to show off their designs. The art is either done by grid/ markers or freehand but all looks amazing and the scouts were told a little about each painting and the artist that did them. After finishing at the Upfest gallery the scouts then walked to Temple meads train station where in the tunnel is some amazing graffiti the whole length and beyond. We all took some photos and the weather was great for the event. Ty Stephen and great job scouts for being well behaved and asking lots of questions. Continuing with the creative challenge award theme we invited in a guest speaker talking about street art and graffiti. The scouts were given a brief history and the legality of street art. Then exercises in hand styles and designing their own tag or name. The scouts were silent during the talk all intrigued and really got stuck into the exercises. Some very creative scouts and some fab ideas. Gj all and ty to our guest. |
