40 acres conservation group invite osr scouts to help work on the new bat sanctuary 07/10/20177/10/2017
The OSR scouts attended 40 Acres today to help clear the area around the new bat sanctuary, First things first we had a safety brief then walked the field perimeter to collect up any litter. Then we started clearing the brambles and overgrown vegetation from around the brick building which will be the new bat sanctuary. After lunch we continued and once all completed the scout troop donated a bat brick to Laurence (40 Acres chairman) who showed the scouts where it would fit in the building and invited us back again for a bat evening of information and spotting using location finding equipment The scouts love this activity and turn up to the hall with arms full of blankets. The hall is turned into a tunnel system with traps and dead ends to try and catch the scouts out as they make their way through without making any noise or disturbing any of the traps. The leaders spend at least an hour setting it up and to be honest probably have just as much fun trying to catch the scouts. At one stage during the event there were all but 3 scouts inside the tunnel system. We cant show you the traps but can show the way the tunnels are formed. Oh yes and the challenge is done in virtually complete darkness. Just before the summer break the OSR scouts were visited by Sue from WaterAid and she told us all about the disgusting water some people around the world have to drink as clean water just isn't available. The scouts wanted to know what we could do to help out and for £400 we can get a pump to a village that needs it somewhere around the world and this will give them clean water and will save many lives. Yesterday the OSR scout troop attended ASDA at Abbeywood Retail Park and after 6 hours of helping shoppers with their bag packing they raised £534.14 which will be more than enough to complete the task the scouts set themselves. BIG congratulations to all involved on making this happen and thank you to Andre and his staff at ASDA for making us all feel so welcome in their store. |
