This evening the keynsham water unit ran an extra kayaking session for the OSR scouts. An hour out on the water playing games and having fun. The scouts gained a lot of confidence on the river Avon. Big ty to the water unit. Winterbourne pond in Flaxpits lane is a lovely place to fish and the OSR scouts have been lucky to get permission to fish there for at least 6 years now. Continuing with our water theme 8 scouts attended the pond today and all but 2 caught at least 1 fish each. The session started of a little damp but dried out quickly whilst the rods were set up and a quick safety brief. Then it was on with the maggots and cast away. We spent 3 hours at the pond and it was peaceful and stress free. Great job all. Big TY to Robin for all his years helping out. Last evening the scouts from the old school rooms troop spent the session learning some basic map reading skills from what is a map to drawing their own map from home to osr. Then learning how to orientate a map to north, grid references, contour lines and bearings with a quiz on map symbols to finish. It was tough going as the scouts wanted to catch up with friends but we got through it and hopefully they’ll remember something. Then the 10 scouts attending the 2 day expedition went through the route plan from woodhouse park to oldbury on Severn. Plus kit list and H&S re cows etc. |
