Originally planned for selection for Kahoutek this weekend (cancelled) we had the patrols competing for patrol points in a problem solving challenge evening. 20 minutes per problem ie putting up a tent blindfolded with sighted members that couldn’t touch any part of the tent, gutter ball run in silence, mission to moon crash landing kit list, wooden model behind a sheet that only half the team could see and communicate to other half of team to build an exact replica and survival kit after crash prioritising. Some great communication skills and some needing work, it’s difficult when one of your senses are removed plus some great logic and attention to detail in mental problems. Gj all. It’s a shame the competition is cancelled we were ready!!! Tonight at st Michael’s school in stoke gifford 10 teams from around Brunel District gathered to challenge each other and their knowledge at the Brunel district quiz run by leaders from the school troop. Entry fee paid and location chosen the 6 scouts from the OSR troop, Megan, Amy, Robyn, Faith , Luke and Charlie took part in 10 rounds from scouting, what happened in 2022 and trees etc. At the end of the evening the quiz was done and the scores were in. 10th place down to second place and we still hadn’t been called then came the “the winners are, masterminds from the 1st Stoke Gifford osr troop and a round of applause and Megan went up to receive the teams various bags of sweets. Big well done to the team. Today 27 scouts from 1st Stoke Gifford OSR troop plus parents and friends joined Steve England at Stoke Park Estate in Lockleaze, Bristol to continue with their Foresters Activity badge. So today with Steve England was a practical walk and talk within this wonderful park area to see at least 8 different types of indigenous and coniferous trees using bark design and touch plus leaves and fruit/ berries. We walked about and Steve (local nature conservationist whom has appeared on local tv news channels) explained how this natural woodland is managed and why. The scouts learnt a great deal and being out amongst nature and hearing Steve was a bonus. To finish off the foresters badge we visited a previous site that had only 5 saplings and replanted the trees we had been kindly given from I Dig Trees charity. The scouts had a lot of fun. Tonight was the start of the OSR scouts taking on the forester activity badge with a presentation made by Martin. The scouts were shown how to fell a tree with a chainsaw and axe and how to trim it. Martin explained about the importance of managing the forests. We learnt about equipment and how to maintain it, how to identify 8 types of trees and they’re leaves and fruit plus how to transplant trees and prepare the soil etc. This weekend we will meet Steve England and complete a walk and talk practical ID in the forest of stoke park and later in term we will be tree planting. |
