Friday to Sunday this week saw the OSR scouts attend Brockmead scout campsite, it was a little wet whilst the scouts put up their tents but that went off and we managed to cook dinner and then play a wide game before hot chocolate and bed. It was damp during the night but we all woke up to a lovely day and full of activities such as crate stacking, tomahawk throwing and tunnelling before lunch. A cooked breakfast and dinner on alterfires and an hour of grass sledging. The evening we held a campfire with 5th Bristol scouts and cubs plus s’mores and hot chocolate before bed. It absolutely tipped down during the night but after waking and cooking in the beast tent the weather brightened up and scouts did a quiz, camp gadgets, axe/ knife/ saw and made a buffet lunch before taking down dry tents and packing everything away. The weekend had the scouts in 3 teams- France, Germany and Spain competing against each other, cooking foods from the countries and quizzing on their country. The winners were Spain with Germany second and France 3rd. Great weekend, we all ate too much and had lots of fun and games. Well done all. Lots of outdoor challenge sections ticked off. Big congrats to Mike for passing his nights away permit and for all the organisation and planning BRAVO. Tonight each patrol transformed one of their own scouts into a robot. All they had for this transformation was the recycling/ junk they brought into the old school rooms with them. Lots of creativity and plenty of discussion and the end results were….what shall we call it, well they definitely looked robotic. Great job all and the overall winners were Eagles. Patrol points and a chocolate reward for all their hard work. Following on from the farming talk at the OSR a few weeks ago by Gemma and Clive, the old school rooms scout troop attended Gemma’s dairy farm to see up close and personal all the things they had been told. The farm has 1,000,000 of technology which cleans up, feeds and milks the herd of 150 cows. Gemma and her husband (Mike) took the scouts on a walk and talk showing us the new borns, juveniles and adult cows. We saw the poo vacuum, feeder and scanners that are scheduled to work throughout the day. The herd are born on the farm after IVF a mix of 4 different breads for better milking. The cows live until they don’t produce milk due to old age and are then stunned and their meat used in dog and cat food. The scouts thanked Gemma and Mike and then all went to the automated milkshake machine. Great visit and tour. Woodhouse Park really know how to do Joti and activities, the 24 scouts and 2 leaders had the run of the site with about 76 other county scouts and lots of leaders, staff and volunteers all for £15 which included a joti badge. Not only could the scouts talk and message chat with scouts from other countries around the world but there were activities such as high ropes, abseiling, climbing, Jacobs ladder, axe throwing, talking on the Avon Scout radio, cooking pizzas, archery, shooting, electronics, programming, crafting like tile painting, beads, power cord bracelets and key rings, wood pyrography and a few others. Fabulous day, weather was better after lunch but the scouts had a fantastic time. A big TY to the organisers, great value for money as the scouts could do everything as many times as they liked and the question were very small. |
