Tonight the OSR scouts attended st. Michael’s school playing field to try their hands at archery some for the very first time. The GSL and archery instructor Paul held a safety brief and demo forming the scouts into groups. The first group using the equipment and the rest watching and learning. A great session and then home. Bristol Bears player Joe Batley came into OSR scouts tonight to talk about Rugby, the Bristol Bears, Nutrician and healthy eating plus the benefits of sleep and exercise. The Q&A lasted over an hour with the Portsmouth born second row answering everything that was thrown at him. The scouts and leaders learnt just how committed you have to be to become and remain a top athlete in the English Premiership. Big THANKS to Joe for coming in and sharing with the scouts. Good luck for next season ! Today saw the OSR scouts from Stoke Gifford meet up with Steven England to explore Stoke Park Estate to complete their Naturalist Activity Badge. We learnt about edible and poisonous plants, habitats for animals and birds, fossils 200+ feet above sea level and plants used by the Roman legions inside their sandles to prevent and medicate cuts etc. We saw a kestrel hunting and found barn owl pellets plus how field mice leave ultra violet urine trails that the birds of prey use to catch them. We learnt some history of the local area and had lunch in the sunshine. Then it was into the woods to learn about useful trees (natural soap) and edible leaves plus mushrooms (black not red) good for firelighting and a practical lesson. All the scouts sat around the fire and presented some interesting facts they had learnt during the day. Today was a great experience with us all learning loads. Big TY to Steve. Todays Stoke Gifford Journal reports on OSR Scouts good work cleaning up the community areas here and in Cyprus. Great job all keep up the hard work #leavingyourmarkeverywhereyougo
