This week we received our new troop hoodies from Ballyhoo in Kingswood. I think everyone will agree how smart they look and the fabric has wicken blend. The scouts are going to love them and we can wear them to all the competitions and outdoor activities we get up to.
Yesterday 22/2/22 at 11am was the time scouts from the old school rooms in stoke gifford took the time to renew their scout promise and remember the birthday of Robert Baden Powell the founder of scouting. Tonight the OSR Scouts welcomed two members from the Royal British Legion. Brian and John came in to visit the scouts and talk about why we wear poppies and the animals that were involved in the great wars. The guests also talked about other details of WW1 and WW2 and the work the RBL does supporting veterans. The scouts are covering the requirements of the RBL/ UK Scouting Poppy badge. The scouts were given details of scouts/ scouters that received the Victoria Cross for their gallantry during action in the war. The Dickens award-VC equivalent has been given to 1x cat, 27x dogs, 3x horses and 32x pigeons. https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/the-dickin-medal Tonight the OSR Scouts tested their scouting skills with knots. Whilst the troop were challenging themselves to The Human Knot the PL’s were being shown how to tie a Reef Knot, a Sheet Bend, a Bowline and an Alpine Butterfly Loop. Returning to the troop the Patrol Leaders had to teach their own patrols how to tie the knots. YL’s and adult leaders watched and helped if needed but it was great to watch the patrols working and helping one another. Once they’d had chance to revise the knots it was down to a patrol challenge relay race to see who had taught and learnt the best. Great evening and one of the quietest sessions where the scouts tried and tried again to perfect the knots. Good job all. |
