So last evening dried out nicely after a wet day, just in time for OSR scouts to complete the Athletics Plus Activity badge. It was field events with discus, shot and cricket ball and most if not all the scouts had never been shown how to throw the discus or shot! So first things first a warm up run by Rebecca and Martin. Then a tutorial on the shot putt and Ali recording the best of 2 throws for each of the 30 scouts. Some great throws from the shot and then a tutorial for the discus plus one to one tweaking of keeping their hands above not below. There is some natural talent amongst the osr troop and the local junior athletics club watching on are interested in any scout that wants to join them. Finally the cricket ball which seemed incredibly light after the shot and some long throws. Then it was the warm down and time to go home. The scores were registered and the troop ended up with 17 athletics plus and 7 athletics badges achieved. The scouts missing out were unfortunately only able to do one session due to school awards evening and or school camp this week. They can complete next time. Good job all that achieved the age banded points. Finally Hugh TY to Wise Centre for letting us use their wonderful facilities and equipment. OSR scouts spent the morning at the duck pond in winterbourne today fishing. The fish were flying into the hooks as everyone seemed to be casting and pulling out perch and roach and tench (I think). Big ty to winterbourne parish council for giving permission and the pond club. All fish put back and scouts handled maggots and fish. Even the blobs of rain were warm and seemed to help with the fish coming to the surface. Well done all and ty Robin for giving up your morning helping out the troop. Today out at Woodhouse park activity centre the old school rooms cubs and scouts joined forces to take on a challenge set by Mike to cook a 3 course meal on open fires including a chicken in a cardboard box per team. Nearly 30 scouts and cubs split into 4 teams all with an adult leader for supervision. First job was to line the cardboard boxes and skewer the corners so that the base could hold a throw away bbq and then a shelf could hold the chicken. Next job was to plan the menu and assign jobs like cutting vegetables, starting the fires and getting equipment plus lots of wood. What a beautiful day, out in the fresh air backwoods cooking. We started at 2pm and finished at 7pm and all 4 teams did a fabulous job. 2 of the chickens needed another 20-30 minutes but the vegetables, sausages, bacon and deserts were lovely. The teams made popcorn, s’mores and drinks for the leaders to taste. A favourite was chocolate bananas. Of course then it was time to clean up and pack up before the award to the winning group. Bags of jelly babies Big well done to all the cubs and scouts and big ty to Mike for organising. Tonight was the first of two sessions for the OSR scouts to complete the athletics activity badge requirements. First things first was a warm up to get all our muscles stretched ready for the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters running events on the superb running track. Big ty to admin who let us use the facilities.
Big well done to the scouts, the badge being age banded saw some younger member achieve what they needed to pass. Next week is the field events. |
