The Avon County Scouts Cooking Comp is early in February 2020 and with the OSR Scout troop wanting to enter again it was time to test our culinary skills. The PLs had to decide on a 3 course menu on the theme of the Olympics all under a budget of £20 and shop for the ingredients. Tonight they explained their menu to their patrols and then to work!! So they had a double burner, a frying pan, Dixie and all the other bits and bobs. The smells were great, fab teamwork and the final results looks amazing. The judges liked lots of the different elements and now to pick a team to represent the troop. Good job all. Clearing up took a while! So tonight the old school rooms troop are split again with half attending the Warhammer shop to do some model making and find their creative side. This is an activity where the scout Association have paired up with the well known gaming store to offer a glimpse of what’s on offer and not only how to make them and paint them but also how the game is played. Some of the scouts already enjoy this hobby and was a chance for them to show some of their knowledge. Big TY to Geraint and the warhammer store for all their help. The scouts got to keep the space marine models they put together and were invited to come back and paint them under the guidance of the experts. The second day was a mixed affair weather wise with some glorious sunshine and some spells of rain. After waking and having breakfast it was time to split into 2 teams (1 pioneering and 1 learning their axe/ knife/ saw skills). Of course stops for drinks and cake plus firelight the alter fires for our lunch. Swap over in the afternoon and more of the same. The bridge looked fab. Good job all. Then it was time to cook dinner and all the scouts took their turn. The rain came in afterwards so just time for a quick widegame and the hot chocolate and biscuits then teeth and ready for bed. Adam a police dog handler came into OSRs to explain to the scouts what he does in the police service and introduced his 2 dogs, the first Benji who is trained to find items that people don’t want to be found like drugs and the second Scooter is trained to control public order situations and track down people that have run away from a crime scene or vehicle. Adam had his Labrador perform a property search exercise and explained about the training that the dogs go through etc. Then he brought in his Belgium Shepard which he showed how obedient he is and then explained how he is trained and also what Adams role is. Big thank you to Adam, Benji and Scooter for coming into the scout troop and sharing with the troop. It is important that the scouts learn about local services and this counts towards the World Challenge Award - Discovery. |
