Tonight’s session for the OSR scouts was all about cleaning, flattening and stitching in preparation for the weekend’s Remembrance Day parade at the memorial in Stoke Gifford. After being split into 3 groups the scouts were shown how to prep their boots/ shoes and then the technique of polishing and buffing them so they look brand new. Also they were shown how to press their uniform and necker and then role them correctly. Finally they were shown how to thread a needle and how to chose what size is required plus choosing thread and starting off sewing badges on to their shirts or a piece of fabric and how to complete the task so it doesn’t come apart. Now they can do it and their uniforms look so good the leaders expect them to maintain this standard for all scout sessions. Good job all tonight. Big ty for all the scouts that lent their leather shoes to be cleaned over and over again. They looked fab. Now we can go to the parade looking like we are brand new. It’s official the OSR Scouts Stem week Bath Bomb Blast Project has been officially awarded CREST Award Certificates. The Bronze Certificates arrived today in the post following 10 hours of work with the initial bath bomb being made at the osr and then the scouts needing to replicate the project changing an element to cause a different outcome. Shopping for ingredients and then completing the workbooks all added to the commitment shown by the scouts that used up some of their half term break to get the project completed. Great job all.
Today was the final day for the old school rooms scouts to hand in their bath bomb Crest award workbooks plus any photos of them completing their second bath bomb at home with a change in an ingredient and of course experiment with the result. Quick re cap we made a bath bomb at osr on the second week back after summer holidays. The leaders registered the science week session with the Crest team at British Science Institute. The scouts then had to shop for the ingredients and prepare and make a second bath bomb changing an amount of ingredient to see the results and record all in the crest workbook. Photos were taken of the at home side of the project. The Bronze Certificates have been ordered and the workbooks sent off for adjudication. Fingers crossed all 13 scouts have done enough. The total time for the project is 10 hours and the award is a recognised national qualification. Gj all that completed this project. Parliament week is a national scouting event to give the scouts more information about how our democracy works and what members of parliament do for us. So we invited Jack Lopresti into the osr but as it’s a sitting week it wasn’t possible so the next best thing was to have a zoom session with Jack in London and the troop members in Stoke Gifford (alison joined us from Andover). Jack explained about his history in politics and the fact he doesn’t see it as work as he is so pationate about representing his constituents. He spoke about how his week works and what he does as a back bencher. His family and how his wife is also an MP. The scouts asked lots of questions and Jack was happy to answer all of them. At the end of the session he invited us up to Westminster for a toured visit and another in person visit sometime in the future. Then the scouts split into 2 sides to debate cats or dogs with kathryn as speaker and Megan leader of cats party and Rayne the leader of the dogs party. Everyone got involved with the flow of the debate and at the end a few scouts changed their views. This did show the scouts just how difficult it is in a democracy. |
