Many thanks to the science department and especially Paul and Heather for inviting the OSR Scout Troop into the UWE to complete the New Science Activity Badge with 4 experiments all with this terms theme of police work. Finger printing methods and heat dilution of material using different temperatures and a spectrometer and also footprint detection using static and finally finding characteristics of ink. All these experiments are used by forensic scientists to help catch offenders and gain evidence. The finger print experiment will be our choice for the Bronze CREST Award project the troop are completing. Great job all and lots learnt. Tonight following in this terms theme of recycling and plastics we had a visit to OSR Scout Troop from Mark who works for South Glos Council Waste Management Dept. The evening started with a presentation showing how our used and unwanted rubbish is divided and treated in all the different processing plants or burnt to generate electricity in the giant furnaces. He then demonstrated how our foods generate energy within our bodies and finished by making the troop a landfill site with every scout selecting and naming either plastic, fruit, cardboard, foil or paper. We will dig the items up after the New Years. Ty to Mark for giving us his time |
