This evening was the guides last as the unit is disbanding so we wanted to make the challenge a good one, so bring on the assault course at Woodhouse. A full safety brief and protective head gear was issued and worn by all taking part, a walk through and demonstration of all the sections and then away we went. The OSR scouts were split into 2 teams and went first completing the course which was dry in an impressive time of 9.57, time penalties gave them a final score of 11.57. Second up were the guides and they received no time penalties and all got fully involved in the mud and water in fact they seemed to be enjoying themselves, their time was 13.38. The OSR second team were next and the course was starting to get a little damp after the guides water fight. I'd like to say how impressed I was by Dylan who didn't miss and obstacle with his disabilities causing him some difficulties but he ploughed on, their time was 18.08. I'm not sure if they had any time penalties as Lee was supervising their run but as the final group were about to start I did have to tell OSR team to stop playing in the water section (they were all drenched and loving it). So now onto the final team the school scouts, I had high hopes for them as most had done the course before. They had a larger team but several missed out all the main obstacles and so when they finished with an impressive time of 11.34 it seemed like they had won but with 6 minutes of time penalties gave them a final score or 17.34. So Osr scouts came 1st and 4th, guides who get the award for teamwork and enthusiasm came 2nd and school scout came 3rd. Well done to all, hot showers and clean up then to the BBQ. Well what can we say about this event, I guess first of all a Big Thank You to all the leaders and helpers that made it possible for a start. Secondly, we must be doing something right because we dodged all the wet weather and even I got a suntan driving the emergency backup car. LOL The scouts met at Woodhouse Park and six hours later arrived in Oldbury-on-Severn, we had dinner and then to the camp site to put up the tents (It was by now 22.35hours)! We all eventually got to sleep with aching feet, legs and shoulders but spirits were high. The next morning we woke at 7am and had packed away everything in time for what I can only describe as the most sophisticated of expedition breakfasts, Janet did us proud with a full English and then some! Ty. The scouts grabbed their packed lunches and were off. The second day was easier as they only had to walk the 10 miles to Berkeley power station. We were all finished by 13.27hours and homeward bound. Well Done to all the scouts, 22 miles is no mean feat and no one dropped out. This was our last evening this season with Thornbury Sailing club and Kestrels and Eagles had their chance. BIG thank you to all the instructors that gave up their evening to take the scouts out on to the water it was breezy this evening and we were able to get quite a shifty on as you can see from the expression on some of the scouts faces. A great time was had by all. WELL DONE |
