The results are in from the OSR scout troop taking part in this years Star Count. According to reports there were minimum 9 stars and maximum 16 stars visible from the Stoke Gifford area. This isn’t great and shows the amount of light pollution we experience in our area. Tonight the old school rooms scouts were joined on zoom by Gary a trustee from the Julian Trust to talk about the trust and homelessness in Bristol. The scouts were told that at the start of the first lock down 300 rough sleepers were placed in hotels and guest houses to protect them and get them off the streets. This number were far in excess of the official rough sleeper numbers. The Julian Trust is supporting other charities during the pandemic as they haven’t the facilities to take in guests 7 days a week and Gary missed the camaraderie with the other volunteers and of course the guests. He told the scouts who were intrigued and asking questions all through the 40 minutes, he enjoys his volunteering and gets a real feeling of making a difference. The scouts main question was how can we help and Gary said about donations, food and clothing especially socks and bower shorts. So now the scouts need to put their thinking caps on and workout just how in these lockdown times we raise money to supply what’s needed. Massive thank you to Gary for an excellent talk. We are grateful for what you do. This weekend the scouts are going to experience what it feels like to sleep outdoors with their very own cardboard shelters in their own gardens of course due to lock down. Good luck all it’s going to be a cold one. Tonight’s zoom session was all about the hobbies activity badge for OSR scouts and all those that attended had chance to share their collections or other hobbies when they’re not scouting. We had leaders who collected scout badges or neckers plus 50p coins, Minecraft soft toys to swimming, acrobatics, football and cricket. Some scouts hobbies were gaming and others were sketching or art. It was fab getting an insight into what the scouts are interested in. Great job all for sharing with us all. Whatever you do keep doing it. This weekend the Old School Rooms Scouts took part in the Big Garden Bird Watch which was coordinated by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The scheme ran for 3 days and the scouts needed to note down the feathered visitors to their gardens over a one hour period. So it didn’t help that the weather was cold, it even snowed on the Saturday but we all filled our bird feeders and got our left over bacon rind ready on the bird tables. Check sheets at the ready and off we go! |
